Introduction to an Animal Lover

Hi! My name is Hannah Rutherford and I am a senior here at OU. I am from The Woodlands, TX – which is just North of Houston. I absolutely love OU and couldn’t imagine being at any other university. Here at OU, I am a Human Relations major. I used to be pre-nursing but I quickly realized that nursing wasn’t for me and I was able to switch! Lucky for me, I am graduating in December! I am really looking forward to it, but I am also a little scared as well. My greatest accomplishment from last semester is that I got a 4.0. Hopefully I will be able to do this again in my last semester. Once I graduate with an HR degree, I hope to get my masters and become a Licensed Professional Counselor. I would like to work with kids in some way and I would love to incorporate therapy animals into my work. I am a firm believer that animals make everything better!

Speaking of animals, I am an extreme animal lover. I have two dogs and two cats at home. My two dogs are Shih Tzus and they are named Shamu and Bella. My two cats are named Maverick and Goose. They are the sweetest animals and I miss them a lot when I am here in Oklahoma. Once I am out of college and living on my own, I hope that I can rescue some animals, such as a Golden Retriever and a couple cats!

This summer, I was in one of my best friends wedding! Her name is Hayley and we have known each other since our freshman year of high school! It was so great to be able to support my friend on her special day! I had never been a bridesmaid before, but it was pretty fun. In addition to the wedding, this summer I went to visit my sister in St. Louis. She had to move there because of her job so it was my first time seeing her apartment. It was a fun visit!

In my free time, I like to hang out with my friends and watch Netflix. My favorite shows on Netflix are The Office, Grey's Anatomy, and American Horror Story. Although it is not Netflix, I recently got into watching The Handmaid's Tale and watched it all this summer! It is a great show, kind of depressing, but a very different and interesting series.

I am looking forward to this semester and I hope that everyone has a great school year!

  1. Therapy animals are amazing, Hannah: what a great professional path that would be to follow! Just last week, I was talking with someone whose grandson is autistic, and it was working with a therapy dog that made all the difference for him. Such a happy story! Your cats and dogs look so adorable; maybe you will make some of them into memes at cheezburger to share with the class! About Handmaid's Tale: we just subscribed to Hulu for the first time ever in order to watch Looming Tower because we BOTH wanted to watch that. So now we have Hulu, and I am very excited to watch Handmaid's Tale at last. I'm not sure if I can talk my husband into watching it or not, but he was all happy that there are old episodes of M*A*S*H at Hulu, so we both will get something we want, ha ha. I am looking forward to seeing what you will do with your project this semester... it sounds like something involving animals may be required, and of course there are animal stories that you can find about all kinds of animals all over the world! :-)

  2. Hi, Hannah! I am also a senior here at OU and I am also a human relations major! I love that you want to work with therapy animals and get into that profession! I think people who work with animals are absolutely amazing and have a special talent. I too am a huge animal lover and I would love to work with animals, but I couldn't handle seeing an animal in pain, so that is what steered me away from being a vet. I am absolutely obsessed with the pictures of your pets, they are so cute! I am constantly showing people pictures of my dogs and rabbit, and I'm sure my friends are tired of it by now.

  3. Hi Hannah! I loved reading your post, it was very well put together. Also, your cats are ADORABLE!!! My cat Isabel looks a lot like Maverick. Handmaid's Tale was a really cool series, especially once they got to season 2 and consequently past the confines of the book they based the series on. I was not very happy about how they ended season 2 (felt a bit like sequel-baiting), but overall it has to be one of the most cinematographically exquisite television shows I have ever seen. Thanks for all the cute animal photos and for the great introduction post! Have a good weekend!

  4. Hi Hannah! I love your post because I can relate to it. I have always love animals. I had a cat until my sister moved out and took her with her. I have also always had a dog up until I started college. I also love to Binge watch shows on Netflix and Hulu. You seem like a really cool person. Also I love your cat goose's hair line on his head because it makes him look like he slicked it side to side to prepare for a fancy ball room dance.

  5. Hey Hannah! That is so exciting that you are graduating so soon- you're so close! I completely agree that animals make everything better. I personally love dogs, but all your animals are so cute! I have read The Handmaid's Tale book, but haven't yet watched the show. I'll definitely have to check it out! And congratulations to your friend Hayley! I haven't been a bridesmaid yet either, but feel like people I know will start getting married soon.

  6. Hi Hannah, nice to “meet” you. Congratulations on earning a 4.0 last semester! Serving as a professional counselor is a very admirable profession. I wish you the best of luck! There is a lot of good research that shows just how beneficial therapy animals can be. They are a great resource for so many people. It would awesome if you were able to incorporate that into your work.

  7. Hey Hannah! Those were some cute photos of your pets! I always get very excited when I see people including their pets in their class introductions. It is amazing that you want to go into professional counseling, this is something I am looking into as well. I am also graduating this December and I could not be more excited. Best of luck to you on you last semester!

  8. Hey Hannah! Nice to meet you and nice to know you love OU! I appreciate your love animals and I also want a golden retriever once I have a place to myself. I love that you got to be in your good friends wedding. I have never been a bridesmaid earlier but my roommate is currently the maid of honor so I'm getting some second hand experience! Glad all is well and congrats on graduation!

  9. Hi Hannah! This might be weird to say but I can relate to you in so many ways! For starters, I was the same way when I graduated high school, knowing that OU was the one place I wanted to go. I am also a senior and I agree it is scary to think that we are finally graduating! Your doggos and cats are adorable! So I am about to be Maid of Honor in a friend's wedding...any tips? And lastly, what are your thoughts on Handmaid's Tale and the new season of AHS?....I love both and am kind of speechless at both. lol

  10. Hi Hannah! First off I just want to say Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! Secondly, your animals are so adorable! My family had a cat named Maverick and he was the best animal we have ever had. Two of my favorite shows on Netflix are also The Office and Grey’s Anatomy, but I haven’t seen American Horror Story. I think it’s awesome that you want to work with kids and therapy animals, I also agree that animals make everything better!

  11. Hey Hannah, I am also graduating soon, although I have an extra semester left before I do. I would definitely agree that it is both exciting and scary, it is really its own unique emotion. I love animals as well and it is interesting to get this information about you after reading your story “The Messenger Dog.” I wonder how your retelling may have been different if you did not have the same love for animals. Best of luck as you take the next step after graduating!

  12. Hey Hannah!
You're so lucky that you get to graduate soon! I can't wait to graduate, but that's an amazing accomplishment! I enjoy animals so much too, but I'm not sure if I am responsible enough to take care of a pet all on my own. I love The Office too! I just started watching it again. I'm only on my second run through though. Anyway, congratulations!

  13. I love your pet's names, and even though I'm not a big fan of cats, I think that all your animals are super cute. I agree with you that animals are really precious. I used to volunteer at the Second Chance Animal Shelter and I met so many cute friends. Congrats on you GPA! I also got weirdly into the Handmaid's Tale, even though it's not the kind of television I'm usually into. I have to wait until I'm in the mood for something so depressing and yet so compelling, and then I'll finish season 2. Good luck with the rest of your semester, and congrats on graduation!

  14. Hi Hannah! I'm actually from The Woodlands, too, so that's super cool! Congrats on your accomplishments and on graduating soon. That's so exciting. I just finished Handmaid's Tale as well. It's such a good show, but super depressing. I am so excited for the next season. Have a great semester, and I can't wait to read more from you!
