Feedback Strategies

Feedback is important in many different aspects of life. Giving and receiving feedback are both important.

This article highlights reasons to stop praising kids at times. One of the reasons from the article that I like the most is that saying praises like "Good Job" creates praise junkies. I have never thought of this idea before but I have definitely seen this before. When an authority figure continues to praise a kid for what they are doing or saying, it is creating a different sense of what is good. The kid is doing what they are doing because they know the authority figure likes it. Ultimately, this is damaging. Giving praise can also reduce achievement. When uses a phrase like "Good job", it makes the child think that what they did might be the only correct way. This then makes the child stop trying to be as creative in the long run. It can be harmful to the way that the child does anything else. This article included a lot of really interesting thoughts. I know that when I have babysat in the past, I use these phrases because I believe that they are helpful in a child's self esteem. I know realize that this is not always the case and instead I should say what I saw more. This creates the sense that I see what you did but I am not going to praise for it.

Explaining why you are giving feedback is extremely helpful. In some cases, it can feel like the person is being attacked. Explaining what you are saying shows that you have high expectations and that you know that they can meet them. I feel like this is something that can often times get misconstrued because people think that they are being rude. Understanding that feedback is a good thing is important. Being aware of not giving a compliment sandwich is important. Feedback is a good thing. This seems to be forgotten.

The Feedback Gallery has a lot of nice options for giving feedback for this class. When you read a story of someone's, it can be confusing. This can be because you don't think the same way as they do or it may be because the story was not clarified. It is okay to ask questions or suggest gaps that should be filled. I know that getting feedback like this will help me become a better writer. It will also make me think if I have completed the story to the fullest extent in latter weeks.
